Week 2  Topic: Nigerian Art Every tribe has an art tradition­, the art tradition is as old as human existance. Nigeria is a country that has many ethnic groups, languages, culture and art styles. This art styles have different characteristics, similarities and functions. Types of Nigerian traditional art i. Nok art ii. Igbo Ukwu art iii. Benin art iv. Ife art v. Tada bronze art 1. Nok art: Is a town in the southern part of kaduna, in kaduna state. The first discovery of the most ancient Nigerian traditional art was made there.  Week 2 Topic: Element of design Definition of design A design is a decorative pattern created with the elements of design to produce a  beautiful artwork Every artwork has materials or things by which it is made. When an artwork is designed a number of elements are included with different objects and colours. To create a beautiful design these elements are combined together.  Elements of design include: Motifs, point, lines, shape, colour, texture, mass etc 1. Motif: A motif defines the purpose of a design. They are symbols by which a design is easily understood. 2. Point: A point is a dot. It is a mark created with the tip of the brush or pen without moving it towards any direction. Dots are used in design. 3. Line: A line is a moving dot. It is simply the distance between two dots. Week 2 Topic: Nigerian Art Definition of Art Art is the creative process of expressing yourself using different method of your choice. History of Nigeria Art A detailed analysis of the Nigerian Art and culture gives you an idea of the widespread stone carvings, potteries, different forms of glass work and wood carvings. The bronze works of Igbo-ukwu in Enugu state stands amongst the ancient works of Nigerian Art. They are bronzes with different parts and small details that fit together. Famous places like Benin and Awka are regarded as the centre of wood carving. Wood carvers are common all over the southern part of the country producing works for temples, palaces etc. Dr Ladi kwali promoted her works through some European countries which has made pottery making widely accepted in Nigeria.
