 Week 2

Topic: Element of design

Definition of design

A design is a decorative pattern created with the elements of design to produce a  beautiful artwork

Every artwork has materials or things by which it is made. When an artwork is designed a number of elements are included with different objects and colours. To create a beautiful design these elements are combined together.

Elements of design include: Motifs, point, lines, shape, colour, texture, mass etc

1. Motif: A motif defines the purpose of a design. They are symbols by which a design is easily understood.

2. Point: A point is a dot. It is a mark created with the tip of the brush or pen without moving it towards any direction. Dots are used in design.

3. Line: A line is a moving dot. It is simply the distance between two dots. Lines are found everywhere around us because they play vital role e.g for direction. The presence of lines in a design can direct the viewers attention on the message in a design.

4. Shape: A shape can be defined as a line. When a line covers an area, it is regarded as a shape. There are different types of shapes like square, circle, triangle etc. They are mostly used in designs as Motifs.

5. Texture: Is the smoothness or roughness of a surface area. The appearance and area of a design might be smooth e.g paper while others might be rough like a wall.

6. Form: Is the part of an object that is visible. It makes it easy to identify such shapes or objects e.g buildings, trees, faces etc.

7. Colour: Colour creates a physical awareness to the eyes when light falls on the surface of an object.

8.Space: Is the area that a shape or form occupies.
