Definition of Art
Art is the creative process of expressing yourself using different method of your choice.
History of Nigeria Art
A detailed analysis of the Nigerian Art and culture gives you an idea of the widespread stone carvings, potteries, different forms of glass work and wood carvings. The bronze works of Igbo-ukwu in Enugu state stands amongst the ancient works of Nigerian Art. They are bronzes with different parts and small details that fit together. Famous places like Benin and Awka are regarded as the centre of wood carving. Wood carvers are common all over the southern part of the country producing works for temples, palaces etc.
Dr Ladi kwali promoted her works through some European countries which has made pottery making widely accepted in Nigeria. The major centres for pottery in Nigeria are suleja in Niger state and okigwe in Imo state.
Another craft work that is well known in Nigeria is cloth weaving. Some of the cloth centres in Nigeria are Oyo, Abia and okene in Kogi state.
Types of Nigerian Art
i. The Nok terras
ii. Ife art
iii. Igbo-Ukwu art
iv. Benin art
1. The Nok terras: are believed to be the oldest sculptures in Africa, south of sahara. They consist of human and animal figures which were made between 500BC and 200AD which for religious and social purpose.
2. Ife art has been described as the most famous natural African art. It was discovered in the early century as the western world thought the works were beyond the capabilities of Africans.
3. Igbo-Ukwu art: The origin of these works is yet to be firmly established but what is certain is that are among the earliest works created in bronze known between 600AD and 1,000AD. Mostly present in Awka and they are made up of bowls, pots, heads and bracelets.
4. Benin art is the art from benin kingdom or Edo empire (1440-1897) located in the southern part of Nigeria. The art was produced for the court of the oba of benin. These works include head of animals, plaques etc made from bronze, brass, clay, terra cotta and wood.
