PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Definition
Principles of design are the rules and guidelines that an artist must follow to create a meaningful design.
The principles of design are:
1.Balance
2.Contrast
3. Harmony
4. Emphasis
5. Movement
6. Proportion
7. Pattern
8. Variety
9. Unity
10. Rhythm
11. Repetition
1. Balance: is the arranging of elements in size, shape and composition.
2. Contrast: is the different use of elements of design to avoid too much sameness.
3. Harmony: is the use of same elements of design throughout a work of art by repetition.
4. Emphasis: is used to capture the viewer’s attention. It is used to make an area of design standout from others.
5. Movement: This is the view the eyes takes through an artwork such as lines, edges, colour, shapes etc.
6. Proportion: is the proper ratio in drawing various body parts. It is also the arrangement of elements in a pleasing manner.
7. Pattern: Is the consistent arrangement of lines, marks or shapes in design.
8. Variety: Is the use of elements of design to capture the viewer’s interest and guide his or her eyes through the artwork.
9. Unity: Is the sense of oneness in a design or artwork. It helps to organize a design for better understanding.
10. Rhythm: When one or more element of design is used repeatedly to create an organized feeling.
11. Repetition: Is mostly used with patterns to create unity within the work of art.

Create a beautiful design using any element and principle of design.
