TOPIC: CONTEMPORARY NIGERIAN ART
Contemporary Nigerian Art are any type of modern art that was created or done after the second war.
The second war started in Sept. 1st, 1939 and ended September 2nd, 1945.

1. AINA ONABOLU (1882-1963) Art educator and painter.
Aina Onabolu was born in Ijebu-ode, Ogun State in 1882. He gained employment at the age of eighteen with the colonial government department and later joined the customs as a clerical officer, he worked for about 20years. He died in Lagos in 1963.
He had reformed education in art and travelled to England in 1920, as the first Africa to study Art. He trained at St. John’s Word Art School London and at the Juhan Academy, Paris, where he obtained a diploma. He is regarded as the father of modern and Contemporary Nigerian Art.
2. AKINNOLA LASEKAN (1916-1974) painter and cartoonist.
Akinola Lasekan was born in 1916 in Owo, Ondo State. He started to practice art on his own and became a freelance artist in 1941.
He worked as a textile designer, and later a cartoonist, a painter & illustrator of bible stories and calenders with (M.S bookshop 1936-1940). He had had his first cartoons publication in 1944. In 1945, he went to study art in England. He came back in 1946, worked as a graphic designer. He was the first newspaper cartoonist in Nigeria.
3. BEN CHUKA ENWONWU (1921-1994) Painter and sculptor. Born in Onitcha, Anambra state in 1921. His father was a traditional carver, so he got his early skills from him. He was tutored by Kenneth murray between 1934 and 1937. He held his first exhibition at the zwemmer gallery, london & Glasgow empire exhibition.
4. MRS. ETSO UGBODAGA- NGU (1921), painter and Art educatior.
Mrs. Etso Ugbodaga – Ngu was born in kano in 1921 by benin parents. She had her primary school in kano and her secondary education at our lady’s high school Kaduna. She was awarded a scholarship in 1950 to study art of the Chelsea School of art London. she is the oldest Nigerian Art Educator to graduate from ABU Zaria
5. BRUCE ONOBRAKPEYA (1932) Print maker and Painter.
Bruce onobrakpeya was born in Agbarha-otor in Ugeli local government area of Delta state in 1932. He had his art training at the then Nigeria College of Arts, science and technology, Zaria now ABU Zaria between 1957 and 1961 where he obtained a diploma in fine Art. He had his first solo exhibition in Ugheli in 1959 & Lagos in 1961.
6. LADI KWALI (1925-1984), Potter.
Madam Ladi Kwali was born in 1925 with no formal education, she practice pottery at a tender age from a traditional potter. Michael Cardew taught her modern techniques of pottery production at kwali pottery training centre now named after her “Ladi Kwali pottery centre” She was given a honorary doctorate Degree by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for her hard work.
7. LAMIDI FAKEYE (1928-2009) Traditional Carver.
Lamidi fakeye was born in 1928 in Ila-Orangun, in Osun State. His father was a traditional carver. He travelled to Paris between 1962 and 1963 under the French government scholarship to study stone carving and cement sculpture.
8. FELIX IDUBOR (1928-1991) Sculptor
Felix Idubor was born in Benin City, Edo State of Nigeria in 1928. His father wanted him to become a farmer against his wish to become an artist but his sister assisted him in becoming an apprentice. He got a scholarship in 1956 to study art at the Royal College of Art London & He held a one man exhibition there in 1957.
