Topic: Motifs
Definition of Motif
A motif refers to the unit of a design or pattern. It can be defined as the basic idea and subject matter in a design. Motifs can be derived from natural or artificial objects such as lines, forms, shades, colour, texture etc.
Types of Motifs
1. Floral motifs: This refers to motifs gotten from plants such as leaves, flowers and other plant parts.
2. Traditional motifs: This type of motifs includes symbols and signs from various cultures.
3. Abstract motifs: These types of motifs have no specific meaning, they are created originally by the artist.
4. Geometrical motifs: This type of motifs are created shapes e.g lines, angles, triangles etc.
5. Pictorial motifs: This type of motifs are derived from man-made objects, human and animal images.
Uses of motifs
1. Motifs are used to beautify and decorate our homes.
2. Motifs are used to make greeting cards.
3. Motifs are used for graphic works e.g wallpapers, books, calenders etc.
4. Motifs can be used for body adornment e.g beads, embroidery and fabrics (Tie and Dye).
5. Motifs are also used for calabash and leather decoration.
